As the cooler, shorter autumn days set in, so a silent cue for Hygge is whispered through the household. Hygge – that useful, unpronounceable, new word that has crept into decorating speak these days and signals cosy-time to start in the house again.
I’ve started gently here at Ednovean Farm, searching out comfortable plump new cushions for the Blue bedroom’s pretty French bed and retrieving warm quilts and faux fur throws for shelves and cupboards to dress the beds again in our own vintage style before sadly putting the fresh white summer covers away for the winter months ahead.
Autumn compensations of hygge
Autumn and winter bring compensations in their wake – cosy evening in front of the fire wrapped, in a snugly wool throw with a purring cat for company.
Just as surely as the first gales of the season hurtled across the British Isle whipping the seas into a frenzy and with it, the local photographers vying for the perfect storm shot, so the clocks will change for winter. The clock change that heralds those early dark evenings and curiously darker mornings too but that are a perfect incentive for our guests to browse our DVD library, after returning from a cosy pub supper in front of a roaring fire or provide a dusky morning accompaniment to our candles flickering in the Breakfast room.
In West Cornwall the dramatic stormy seas of autumn that hurl plumes of white foam high in the air over the cliffs and coastline can be watched at iconic Land’s End or at nearby Sennen where the sea will lift high over the cliffs or Porthleven rear high over the institute in. Somehow autumn and winter time, provide the perfect excuse after the thrill of the storm, for a long and relaxing soak in a bath.
And for us
Extraordinarily enough after the very first gale of autumn this year, the starlings arrived once more, swirling overhead, ready to tease me to try to reach Marazion marshes in time to watch the murmuration as the sun sets.
