Autumn is calling
September is the month when the earth sighs with quiet contentment for a job well done. Yet summer lingers on through the days, with only the closing dusk hints of the approaching autumn.
Maybe Cornwall sighs just a little too, as the traffic eases on the country lanes and yet the empty beaches embrace the still warm seas.
September treats – eat alfresco in village squares or cosy pubs
It’s time to relish the summer days that remain and anticipate the crisper days of autumn now of course. But just for a while, in the sigh September summer lingers on.
Occasionally we too will treat ourselves. Perhaps an alfresco lunch in the village square in Marazion perhaps or an afternoon swim in one of the coves around Perranuthnoe.
The flower decked King’s Arms always catches my eye. as we drive passed. This September we joined the lunchtime throng amongst the gaggle of parasols set among the flowers on the cobbles
Opposite – an alfresco lunch in the autumn sunshine, at The King’s Arms in Marazion.
Or maybe supper in the local pub?
We walked down to the village of Perranuthnoe that’s just a couple of fields away the other evening. We sampled the Friday special of a classic pub dish on special offer for: – steak, chips, salad and sauce all accompanied by a bottle of Spanish wine for £40.
Supper at The Victoria Inn (In the chef’s defence I did ask for Very well done!)
A view from the horses barn
The wildlife around the farm is starting to alter their habits ready for the changing season. And yet still the pigeon whistles high in the rafters, rearing yet another nest of squabs.
The stables’ robin has emerged and started to sing once more ass we feed the horses in the morning. They always withdraw for their seasonal moult, morose and embarrassed, at the end of the summer. However, now with fresh feathers they’re ready for the seasons to come. ‘Our’ robin has already staked his claim to the foraging rights over the cat’s dishes for a comfortable winter and swears insistently from the gate if the cats linger too long over their food!
The hedges are laden with berries now – plumb glossy blackberries and juicy sloes. The crows have formed a determined marauding party into the orchard to strip the cooking apples. Although the windfalls are eagerly collected by the foxes and badgers as seasonal extra treat as the young start to learn to search for food.
The evening view
In the early evening, the house martins twist and turn in flight over the fields, celebrating their summer success and hunting for insects with their newly fledged young. Soon they’ll be gone – risking all for the long migration in search of another summer. In the spring I’ll watch the skies once again eager for their return, as the earth breaths a new urgent energy into the days.
