The seasons of summer have swept around Ednovean farm, bringing joyful sun dappled days and then by a flip of fate’s coin, the pain of loss.

But let me firstly tell you of the happy days as the garden has fizzed and scrambled towards mid summer.

The dizzying May days as the Echiums shoot skyward almost overnight, to give a hint of the cypresses of Italy and lend new emphasises to the garden landscape. They are the elegant punctuation of chance of course. To emphasise their point they seed themselves in ever-changing, yet perfect spots each year.
Each year there’s always a folder of unused photos marked May that go “unblogged”. This year will be different. This year May will appear!

Sun dappled mornings
As May turned to June we had sun dappled days, as the sun has risen above the hillside each morning, to illuminate the courtyard with the first golden light and changing shadows.

The early morning courtyard
These early mornings have been a favourite time of mine this summer, accompanied by Spud underneath the Date Palms amongst the bird song and the shadows.
Quiet reflective moments stolen from the day, when our guests have yet to wake and the bustle of serving breakfast is ahead.

Shimmering afternoons

An afternoon spent in silent contemplation of the light on the terracotta pots, filled with vibrant red geraniums with the company of a good book is seldom wasted. The surrounding scented fennel and lavender brings the fragrance and warmth of the Mediterranean to the courtyard.
Spud-cat and Danilon
It’s been our greatest joy to spend many years with the two great souls of Spud and Danilon.
So there’s a tinge of sadness to this months blog, as these two members of our Ednovean family are no longer with us.

Spud-cat 2010 – 2026
We unexpectedly lost the Spud in the heat wave this summer.
He was the very spirit of the garden, always racing through the seasons with me and eager for our next adventure. If you’ve followed my blogs I’m sure you’ve met him many times.
He chose Ednovean Farm as his home, as a frightened young cat and grew to make it his very own kingdom.

Danilon 31st March 2001 – 8th June 2026
He was followed by our dignified Spanish stallion Danilon – the original Silver Stallion from Spain.
Danni was bred at Yeguada Suseata near Madrid, and we imported him when he was four years old. He lived his twenty five years with us.
He leaves us with his son Magic and granddaughter Lizzie and sons as far away as France.

The seasons of our lives
The bittersweet days of May and June this year are part of the season of life and of summers lived. The compensation of mellow golden sunshine that draws us onwards …
