“Merry Christmas” we chortle to one and all as our world has paused and idled through Twixmas, before a final assault on the New Year. Two simple words that can make all of the difference to others. Two words with message of hope and goodwill for the season.
Our journey to Christmas trees and candlelight started on a dark day in November in the eye of an approaching storm. So take a look behind the green baize door with me at Ednovean Farm, as we cosily celebrate a very Merry Christmas.
Two Christmas trees two ways
Christmas is a time for “Putting on the Ritz” after all – so why not treat ourselves two trees to decorate in two styles?
For our slate flagged hall we have a pot grown Nordic inspired design and upstairs in the Dining room the full cut Monty of decadent excess!
Finding the perfect tree
Christmas preparations
Christmas must start with the annual negotiations when buying a cut tree that “It really will fit – we’ve a high ceiling”
It was raining this year ahead of a storm – so it quickly came down to a choice between two trees! The chosen tree was swiftly netted and lashed to the car with baler twine!
The next day as the latest named storm rattled the windows, we smugly sat in front of the fire with a mug of tea nodding to each other, and the tree sat in a bucket of water.
I’ve bought cut trees over the years, except they’re often devoid of any useful root – which leads to disappointment of course. Then a couple of years ago, I struck gold with a rooted tree, with actual roots and the instincts of a survivor!
Over the years it’s grown and prospered in the car park here incongruously next to a palm tree. In fact it’s grown rather too well and has a different position on the hall this year on a sturdy trunk. Charles is hopeful that one day it will be the main tree and cut out the negotiations and the car journey all together!
A nostalgic Christmas vibe
Our Ednovean Christmas Table is laid with full blown nostalgia each year. We use lovingly stored family pieces that spend the rest of the year in dark distant cupboards. This year I found some stylish striped crackers to update our look.
I have to confess I do love to set a scene for meals with candles and flowers, throughout the year though. In the summertime guests, the aim is for a relaxed-country-meets-Mediterranean look for our Breakfast tables.
However for our Christmas table it’s more of an English country house vibe – as far as you can in a converted barn of course!
Here’s some of the details:-
In this picture the famous Mason’s Ironstone Blue Mandalay china is complimented by cut glass and candle sticks from The White company. The laying plates came from R&J Supplies at Praa sands many years ago. Finally I bought the roses a week before Christmas and stored them in an outhouse – before visiting Penzance for the chunky hand made candles. And yes retro prawn cocktail to start!
Finally, a Very Merry Christmas to you!
