A duo of Breakfast room ideas

June 5, 2021

A duo of Breakfast rooms are waiting for our guests this year at Ednovean Farm. A few months ago I shared the work behind making of a snug little sanctuary in the farmhouse in Country decorating on a budget. So I hope that you’ll enjoy these Breakfast room ideas too.

One has a Bohemian antique influence and the second rustic and French inspired.

Each new breakfast room at Ednovean Farm is in our very own style, with a fusion of rustic, contemporary and vintage.

Planning for our new look Breakfast rooms

Over the last month before we reopened I carefully edited, added, repurposed and refined two breakfast rooms with two very different characters.

One is richly coloured and glows with antiques with a Bohemian twist and the other French inspired and filled with light.

You never know, you may be inspired to make your very own breakfast room sanctuary. Because a breakfast room is a perfect spot to linger for a while and plan your day!

“Ednovean is looking amazing. Who would have thought lockdown would usher in a totally new and upgraded phase, with so many benefits for you and the guests?”

All Things Bright and Good

My Bohemian inspired Breakfast room

Bohemian inspired Breakfast room at Ednovean Farm
Each Breakfast room at Ednovean Farm has its very own style with a fusion of rustic, contemporary and vintage ideas. This one is Bohemian inspired and my starting point was the lampshades

In the former guest sitting room, the existing Persian rugs and imported hand embroidered wall hanging, became the backdrop with their rich vibrant colours. And then the fun began!

A Victorian breakfast table was a sale room find

A Breakfast table for two….. well maybe four or six!

Shopping in lockdown isn’t easy but on line auctions are a mine of beautiful antiques and treasured vintage pieces right now. At the local salerooms, I spotted a gleaming Victorian Breakfast table, along with a set of Balloon backed chairs. With Charles tapping the keyboard to bid, they were secured very reasonably and delivered days later.

Well I do have to admit the table was slightly bigger than anticipated (metric measurements aren’t my strongpoint!) But Charles immediately fell in love with the stately table and became their instant protector and champion. I have to admit the size will also serve perfectly if both bedrooms open on to it as suite!

Decorating a breakfast room with lots of pictures

Pictures & things!

To balance the formality of the mahogany table, I searched for witty, artistic pieces, with a bohemian vibe to decorate this Breakfast room. Pride of place had to go to the Catherine Hyde horse print. Don’t you think it looks a lot like Danni!? Catherine’s creative works are full of the deep Celtic soul of Cornwall. To the right Racheal Mia Allen’s soulful view to Ding Dong mine brings a fresh contemporary edge and to the left a Lithographic print which was a sale room find.

Bespoke hand painted lampshades from Bloomsbury Revisited

Lightshades and lamp bases

For lighting, I chose some gorgeous hand painted lampshades. Before giving a new distressed paint finish for a pair of vintage Laura Ashley candlesticks.

I used a basecoat of Farrow and Ball Cooking Apple Green and then overpainted it with Downpipe. Finally the bands were picked out in a bronze metal paint and I distressed them with a light rub over to show the paint layers.

Already the lampshades helped to bring new points of green into the room. Now what was needed was a splurge”

*I wanted to pick up the deep green of the chairs and the Peas and Lilies shades (address book below!) are a perfect, painterly foil against Farrow and Ball Dead Salmon walls.

Balancing the colours

The longed for balloon backed chairs were already swishly upholstered in a deep green velvet. “Nice tidy set ladies and gentleman” intoned the auctioneer, lingering teasingly, as we waited for the hammer to fall with bated breath!”

My splurge was a heavy, glass hurricane lamp/vase from Penny Morison in a gorgeous vibrant green; then a saving on with two little witty candlesticks from Habitat at Sainsbury’s.

Finally a tall reflective mirror was placed to widen the space with a second one on the picture wall to throw some light into the corner.

Now budget buys, mingle with designer goods and sale room finds, in a Bohemian Breakfast room at Ednovean Farm

And the room was complete!

A French inspired Breakfast room

The garden room is possibly more French inspired, with lots of natural textures from the wood, stone and terracotta. Finally the colour washed walls and gentle painted furniture make a relaxing backdrop. From here another sofa took its leave but the vintage Habitat wicker chairs have stayed, loaded with cushions.

Finishing work on our breakfast room at Ednovean Farm

The decorating went to the wire here!

Builders have to be booked months in advance in lockdown and our final jobs could be fitted in until the final weekend before we opened.

But on Sunday our builders made a new door for the Garden Room. These have been modelled on shutters and suite the bottom of the steps in the former Dairy. Believe me I was up at 6.30 on Monday to paint them in French Grey. this is an opaque stain, especially mixed at the local Dulux Centre in Penzance. It did feel slightly surreal to be serving a breakfast there by Tuesday though!

A Country Breakfast Room

Oak Breakfast table - auction finds are a sustainable choice

!8th century Oak

For this room an 18th century oak table was a treasured auction find, to accompany two Arts and Crafts chairs. A perfect way to sustainably add furniture with the investment of a few hours T.L.C.!!

This gives a simpler country look for an more informal breakfast room at the lower end of the courtyard.

Finally, hours of crawling around the terracotta floor applying layers of Traffic Wax added shine to the old floor.

I’ve even added a few house plants – I wonder if there are instructions on them!

Interior style - country decorating

The accessories for this French inspired Breakfast room

One of the main pieces has to be the distressed bust found in Penzance. Along with the most glorious, carved wooden bowl, which was a gift from an Instagram friend.

Ednovean Farm has two very different Breakfast rooms. Each has been crafted from different parts of the building with its own unmistakable character.

I wonder which one would be your favourite, if you were to stay with us!

Breakfast in a room to make an occasion

To make breakfast an occasion is a big part of a Bed and Breakfast. And a charming room to enjoy eating breakfast has to be a big part of a holiday in Cornwall.

This is one of our most popular Breakfast ideas: – Smashed Avocados drizzled with olive & chilli oil with smoked salmon and poached free range eggs.

Whilst working “in real life” Breakfast tend to be a motor way express route to the door. But at the weekend why not start the day with a little bit of pampering?
