Supper at the Mackerel Sky Seafood bar, Newlyn

September 18, 2016

We ate supper at Mackerel Sky Seafood bar in Newlyn and I took a snap as we left of teh brightly lit restaurant

We had a longing for a treat this week and chose the Mackerel sky seafood bar in Newlyn for supper. After all, where would we find fresher fish than the nearest fishing port just across the bay from us where fish are auctioned at the market and sent to France, Spain and Portugal!

Now it is not possible to book a table at this little tapas bar but after a tour of likely parking places in Newlyn we not only found the very last free spot in the car park but strolled into the restaurant to find the last two seats at a window bench. How lucky that was!

Half a lobster with salad and chips with a chic bucket holding tooles for opening the lobster claws at Mackerel Sky seafood bar

The seafood bar is a quirky little restaurant with a vintage vibe and we perched on industrial chic stools quite comfortable soaking up the atmosphere until our smiling waitress arrived.

Menue choices (Sepember 2016)

Charles quickly chose his favourite dish of half a Lobster in herb butter – a steal at £11.95 with extra sides of the house salad and chips at £3.00 each, while for me the whole Mounts Bay Sole at £6.95 called. If we had been particularly hungry we would have chosen a second dish from the menu but for us it was more than enough and we settled down to watch the chefs cooking our supper over a glass of well chilled white wine and watching the reflections in the window

  • I sat and admired the restaurant refleced in the window in front of me
  • Mounts bay Sole accompanied by chips and salad and a glass of chilled wine of ocurse
  • Tow delicous puddings cleverly presented in cups

Our supper came swiftly and Charles described his Lobster as “sweet and tasting of the sea” and my sole was just delicate and gorgeous and we both agreed that the chips were the best we’ve had this year (although the chip-potato time of the season now lends itself to them!)

Should we eat Pudding? Yes of course, why not, this was our treat after all and so we opted for Affogoto, espresso with Hazelnut and toffee ice cream and our waitress kindly explained that the express should be poured over the ice cream and it  proved to be a distinctive, winning combination.

I glanced at the tables and chairs set outside under the flaming brazier as we left and wondered if it would have been warm enough on this mild September evening to sit there – you know I think it would have been…………. there is always another occasion.

Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar opens from March until the 1st of November.

Restarant starter with diner and glasses for places to eat

I’ve made a handy list of great places to eat that are close to Ednovean Farm but really in West Cornwall no place is ever very far away and we haven’t tried them all yet so you may make a wonderful discovery to tell us about!
