Discover Penberth cove

Penberth cove in West Cornwall - fishing boats on the slipway

Penberth Cove, an idyllic fishing hamlet is hidden in plain sight, here in West Cornwall. It is totally unspoilt and if you enjoy exploring special secret places then Penberth is a must of your bucket list.

……and to me it looks as though the world has turned and forgotten its existence in a Brigadoon like way.

Perhaps the most perfect fishing cove in Cornwall’.

Poldark Film location

This sheltered beautiful cove set between the cleft of two steeply plunging hills, has a handful of granite cottages that guard the massive granite slipway to the sea.

A visit to Penberth Cove will bring about a feeling of the curiously familiar and for Poldark fans it has been on our TV screens every Sunday in the guise of Sawle village. Find some more Poldark locations

This timeless cove absorbs the characters and costume of the 18th century as easily as it encompasses the discreet number of tourist that visit everyday

Fishing and Capstans a Penberth

19th Century Capstan - Penberth Cove

Penberth is primarily a fishing cove and there are still boats waiting for the tide on the slipway and lobster posts stored around the mighty capstan. From Penberth they fish for Mackerel, Lobster and line caught sea bass but these days an electric winch pulls the boats up the steep slip from the sea rather than the 19th century capstan that took eight men to turn it.

Stepping stones over the streams

Stepping stones through the stream at Penberth

Stepping stones cross and re-cross the stream that cascades down through the cove, with a line of fishing boats and a capstan waiting the dreaming sea of summer.

Finding Penberth Cove

Follow the Road from Penzance to St Buryan before The turning for Penberth is hard to find – it is so neatly concealed beside the decoy turning to Logan’s Rock. (Just opposite to a cut flower stall)
In fact the road doubles back on itself to access this sheltered valley and the narrow lane plunges between bracken clad banks following a stream that tumbles and gurgles into the cove below.

Lane to Penberth Cove
  • Look out for Chelsea Gold medallist Penberth Plants who may have a stall beside the lane.
  • There are about ten parking spaces beside the stream just before the end of vehicular access
