This week we’ve enjoyed an Indian summer here n the UK and it has lent us some very special day here in west Cornwall too! We were so tempted by the early autumn sunshine that we played truant to our B&B and garden, on Friday afternoon and visited Sennen cove instead!
I was mesmerised by the blue sunlit bay as we turned off of the main road and the swathe of white sands stretching into the far distance beside the bluest sea, as we swung into the car park at the cove.
A journey to Sennen
The day hadn’t started too well of course there – was a huge traffic queue on the A30 after an accident and I could just see Charles calculating how far he could have walked along the coast to a cove from Ednovean, in the time, as we sat motionless on the carriageway – although nobody mentioned it of course! Still finally we escaped the jam with a nifty detour along the back lanes to Penzance and the drive fell away as we arrived at Sennen and I gazed out over the magical sands.
I really had forgotten just how beautiful it was there!
And what a view! To our west the Longships lighthouse of Land’s End and to our east, Cape Cornwall with it twin peaked islets just of shore and after the gaggle of house of Sennen village beside us……….. only a perfect expanse of clean white sand rimmed by gently rippling blue sea.
Of course we had to walk along the beach to find the perfect spot – a quiet secluded spot – to watch the world go by! I just began to wonder how many miles we would walk until Charles found the “right place” when he chose a spot just under a granite cairn halfway along the beach. And there we sat to watch the sea gently lapping the sands below us and I contemplated visiting the waves quite soon as I dozed in the sunshine. Occasionally I’d swear we heard Cornish choughs call mixed with the idle rhythm of the waves.
Eventually, as the afternoon went on, the lure of the water drew me to the waters edge to watch the water rippling in sparkling patterns around my feet with the warm fine sand between my toes.
Too soon we had to leave this last glimpse of summer and walk slowly back along the sands to the car park where Lucy Landrover was waiting to ferry us back along the A30 from Land’s End but the memory of the perfect afternoon on a Cornish beach, that hinted of the Mediterranean, will last for a long time – our visit to Sennen in Cornwall to celebrate the Indian Summer.

Location and parking
To visit Sennen Cove take the A30 from Penzance to Land’s end – Sennen is signposted on the right just before Land’s End. There is parking at the top and further parking as you enter the village at the bottom of the hill to the right just above the sands and limited harbour near the lifeboat slipway.
Walking
To the west climb up the fairly steep hill from the cove to enjoy a breathtaking walk to Land’s End or just walk the miles of fine sand at low tide. Alternatively the dramatic walk toward Cape Cornwall along a path where the heathland meets the sea with great granite outcrops would never disappoint.
Surfing
Sennen is famous as a Surfer’s destination and there are two surfing schools based there if you would like to try a new challenge Try the Sennen Surfing Centre or the Smart Surf school or my particular favorite park just above the beach and watch the aficionados battling with the waves from a warm dry car!
Restaurants
Ben Tunnicliffe’s new restaurant is definitely on my bucket list with fabulous views over Sennen Cove from the informal Deck or chic restaurant dining behind the vast glass windows. We used to enjoy Ben’s cooking when he cooked at the Abbey restaurant in Penzance (now closed) For a traditional seaside pub try the bustling Old Success Inn just on the corner or for a relaxed snack The Little Bo Cafe for pavement dining above the sea with indoor cafe across the road.
