My February Garden diary

As February gives way to March the month which brings with it the official meteorological first day of spring, the sunshine still conceals a chill in the air. And yet the garden is leaping into life around me, with bulbs emerging throughout the garden, each flower bringing bright splashes of colour to our lives after the long winter. How carefully I look at the new delicate buds each day, as if they could predict the year for me, as the Jet stream sinuously weaves its powerful spell over the British Isles. It never stays in one place or should I say position for long enough for me to predict my week let alone month and so the unrelenting progress of spring brings its own reassurance of the continuity of the season.

This month in the Ednovean farm garden we’ve continued to clear and set the garden up ready for the year stopping as always promptly at 3.00p, for afternoon tea of course and somehow to sit and sip tea in the sunshine under a sun warmed granite wall and shut our eyes to soak up the warmth is to dream of Summer just around the corner.

For my photo album this month I wandered around the garden and took a few snaps of the flowers in the last golden rays of the day, as I waited for the sun to set over Mounts bay – rather as I’m waiting for the last vestiges of Winter to loosen its grip on our domain.

The great Gardens of Cornwall

If you are visiting Cornwall this month it is a great time to visit t the wonderful valley and estate gardens of Cornwall known as The Great Gardens of Cornwall. Each garden will be full now  of the exotic vibrant Camellias, Azaleas and Rhododendrons that grow so well in the acidic soils with the magnificent Magnolias overhead. Near to us just behind Penzance, the great estate garden of Trengwainton and the more intimate Trewidden have just reopened and I’m sure they will be a real treat for spring garden lovers.
