Hello June! As June begins the elderflowers are laying in heavy creamy clouds along the boughs; the early apple blossom are fledgling fruit and the shadows pool deeply in the orchard.
Summer! The dizzying dreams of the summer garden packed with froths of oxeye daisies and swaying spires of foxgloves …

The intimate garden

Mid summer has flamboyantly arrived, bringing endlessly long days, that stretch into the balmy night air.
The short guarded days of winter seem a world away now to the lush world filled with bird song.

The spirit of place
We try to garden here with empathy for the spirit of place and work with nature in this special garden on the slopes above Mounts Bay.
Summer is the time to celebrate the garden that reflects the gifts of spiritus loci* or spirit of place.
For this is a spot where the centuries have created a very special atmosphere.
*The Roman mythology called it The Spirit of Place – a guardian of the landscape.

The Albertine Rose
The glorious Albertine was bred in France by Rene Barbier in 1921. This version was given to me for our first garden here by my father, when I married Charles
The tight coppery buds gently fade to pink over the days and then scatter petals across the gravel in a drift of confetti.
It’s a treasured memory and one that I eagerly anticipate each year.
As it blooms each year I feel a subtle mixture of nostalgia. Memories of the rose that I’ve known all of my life and the passage of the years in our home at Ednovean Farm.

A herald of summer
Ednovean’s characteristic combination of formal topiary, sub tropical palms and grasses are now combined with wild flowers. The Italian Garden remains aloof however and strictly Mediterranean!

June the hot colours of summer
Suddenly as June marches forward we have Sunshine and hot summer colours through the garden. Crocosmia Lucifer, vivid day lilies and a tumble of Agapanthus. A dash of glorious deep reds, swaying agapanthus and rippling grasses all framed by blue seas of Mounts Bay.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed your dip into yet another June in our Gardens at Ednovean farm. As I look back through the garden diary there’s been so many Junes since I’ve been writing this blog to you!
