June has been a wonderful month for the garden here at Ednovean farm, with the sun almost dancing in the garden’s shadows. The long dry spell has suited our planting of drought loving and grey leafed plants perfectly here in our seaside garden. This month more of the garden furniture has had a bright new makeover, more unruly hedges have been almost tamed into submission and I completed a tiny new garden project.
To celebrate our twenty-fourth wedding anniversary (and incidentally twenty four years as a B&B) I planted a small raised terrace above the sundial garden with an arc of white hydrangeas fronted with box balls. I planted the little box plants, that I had grown from cuttings, out last year and this year they were ready for their first trim to start to shape them.
For other parts of the garden I’ve chosen a vibrant blue to pick out the benches and tables and chairs. This month I was thrilled by a gift of a beautiful golden David Austin rose called “Golden Celebration” from two departing German guests and planted my unexpected treasure in the little entrance courtyard in a box edged bed recently vacated by Loquat that sadly “passed on”
The box that sat mournfully near death for so long has at last cheered up with its latest herbal treatment and is now blushing gently green with new growth – long may it continue. I daren’t tempt fate by trimming it yet even though, even if the traditional Derby day time limit has come and gone – but at least it looks mostly respectable now. I took this snap first thing this morning looking down over the courtyard and across Mounts bay to Penzance and have to say that June is just such a glorious month for the garden.
I started to make a new map of the garden working from the map I used when we opened for the NGS – it’s work in progress but you might have fun guessing where the photos were taken in the garden!
