Footsteps into Autumn

October 21, 2024

Our footsteps are gently treading towards autumn now and slowly the season is changing in the relentless and ageless passage of time. A cycle that’s repeated each year like the insistent clicking of a clock.

The autumn leaves are drifting down now as we step into autumn

This year I’ve started to see the autumn days as a celebration of the year that’s gone. A culmination of the summer sunshine; of the billowing rainclouds; all in a journey towards the zenith of the year. A seasonal journey finally revealed in the gently fading leaves and abundant fruits of autumn.

Fallen leaves to mossy stillness

Truly time lent from summer to absorb the very essence of the season, whilst surrounded by the mellow moments of autumn.

Autumn days that are so warm in the sun that teased and dappled into the hidden corners of mossy calm in the courtyard.

In the Ednovean farm gardens, the swathes of grasses have sent their dancing seed heads up to dally with the season and now so gently fade.

Autumn choices

On mellow autumn days the temptations are endless! The beaches are empty, the lanes are still – what better time to explore from the coast to the countryside; a coastal walk? A picnic? Or a visit to afar flung country pub?

An autumn drive to the north coast

A drive across west Cornwall to a quintessential Cornish Village nestled in the autumn landscape

We returned to Zennor this time taking an overland route via Newmill. This is a beautiful seasonal drive across to the north coast. Delve deep into West Cornwall along winding lanes to follow streams under copper leafed trees flanked by golden banks of bracken and open moorland.

Zennor is a village that straddles the autumn dream, set between ancient fields and rugged cliffs. You may remember my last visit to find the famous Mermaid seat, in my recent Ice creams and Mermaids blog. Gentleman! I’ve found the Mermaid Ale and a crackling log fire in The Tinners Arms for you today!

An autumn picnic

However we set off towards the cliffs to find the perfect spot for a picnic.
A crag above Porthzennor cove was a wonderful vantage point in the October sunshine. Perfect to watch the waves roll towards the cliffs. “Was that a Cornish Chuff below?”  “Oh look there’s more boats on the horizon! A timeless contemplation!

I do hope that you’ve enjoyed my impressions of autumn. The tantalizingly mellow season that slows life down from the year. with a gentle sigh.
