Our February garden, stealing a march on summer

March 1, 2017

February garden entrance

We stole a march on summer this month in the garden, working intensely to prepare the Italian Garden ready for its role in a short period film pilot last weekend and did you spot Ednovean Farm’s House and Gardens as “The Garden House” in Sunday’s Rosamunde Pilcher premier? (details below!) I think the garden stole the show from the house but our German guests said “it was like taking a visit again” and “Fairy tale setting!” Thank you to all of our kind European friends who told us about the film and sent the link so we could watch it too!

So join me this month to see my snaps of a few days of hard labour by ourselves and our gardeners and I think the result was pretty good although I say it myself!

Stealing a march on summer

So the Italian Garden was to be the star this month in a short period film and moved by default up the maintenance order by several places. Cam who looks after the tall formal hedges came in for three days to cut and shape the hedges –  wielding his hedge trimmer from scaffolding these days as they have grown so tall.

When there are not too many leaves on the hedges it had to be intense attention to detail to carry the garden through (although I had explained that in February it was unlikely to have very much lush foliage!) As the framework was trimmed just as the first green shoots started to appear, to give a sleeker sharper outline and I’m sure this has put down a good foundation for later in the year.

  • Main entrance - February in the Italian Garden
  • formal garden aisle leading to statue
  • Garden bench flanked by standard bay trees
  • Statue of David in Italian Garden
  • Italian Garden tranquil private garden bench
  • crisp righ angles in the hedges
  • Edging tool leaning and lawn mower

Finally a smart edge was cut following the line of the hedges to give a crisp formal outline. These straight lines really emphasised the approach to the statues at the end of vistas and cross vistas and I hope added to the illusion of a Maze which was to be the Italian gardens formal role.

Our Bed and Breakfast guests this weekend were kind enough to say the garden was “beautifully maintained!” I think I mostly crawled back up to the stables at the end of the three days though!

The wilder garden

After working to intensively in the formality of the Italian Garden it is such a complete contrast to walk down through the wilder areas of the garden where geometric outlines give way to relaxed undulating planting

It was such a glorious morning on Thursday after  “Storm Doris” that I took a little video – the quality from our little camera is never great but you can hear the birdsong!

Spring days in the garden

This month in the garden the burgeoning collection of spring daffodils are a daily delight now, filling the end of the garden by our memory stone with vibrant yellow, softly scented blooms. The sheltered gravel garden has wintered well too with I was rewarded by one of the Aloes producing a vibrant Orange flower

  • Daffodils and Narcissi in spring
  • Spring morning lush grass and daffodils
  • Granite post focal point with spring daffodils
  • spring dafodils in the garden
  • February garden border
  • Orange Aloe in flower this spring

Ednovean Farm garden in a Rosamunde Pilcher film

Through the week I always post our latest updates to our  Facebook page – this is the one with the link to the Rosamunde Pilcher film that was released this Sunday in Germany. The romantic film featured a surprising amount of scenes set in our home and garden in its role as “The Garden house” a hippy chic home, with a  penchant for bright colours. (mind you we did ask if we could keep the comfy garden swing!) We watched the film on the German equivalent to i player on the link above and thoroughly enjoyed the romantic imagery although we didn’t understand a word of course
