A garden’s journey into 2024

March 20, 2024

Spring is in the air here in the Ednovean Farm gardens and suddenly, another winter is tentatively morphing into spring. The garden, like a well oiled engine is gliding smoothly into growth. The gardens knows their job only too well these days and thankfully these days, we’ve too, have picked up a few time saving ideas, about how to live with its ambitions!

A spring garden diary

A garden diary can become a catalogue of the seasons and the years; a look at changing tastes and growing maturity, all gathered as a handy voice of your conscience!

If you read my last garden blog when I was giddy with the prospect of a sixteenth of an inch of snow, which lasted all of three hours?

In this entry, we travel from the winter preparations, to the first flowers of springtime here at Ednovean.

As the garden matures

Sometimes I think I might have said everything there is to say about a garden. However when a friend visited us the other day, she said she could see huge difference it the gardens maturity. At that moment I realised just how privileged we were to watch our garden grow and mature over the years.

Shaping the garden ready for the summer

Of course as the garden matures, so the need to edit the contents becomes even more pressing. The strong design framework has held the winter season together for the winter; the repeating geometric shapes of the topiary, the rhythm of the planting …. However now is the time to consider how the garden will support the summer use if those drowsy summer days that we all dream of – glass of wine in hand of course – are not to become a nightmare from Hans Christian Anderson proportions.

Regeneration in the Italian Garden

This year The Italian Garden hedges have had a major overhaul. We had to be quick this spring, before the birds begin to nest or even started to flick through to real estate pages for “Birds Weekly”. The hedges here, defiantly had leanings towards a more sinister scene in a Harry Potter movie and whilst I’m all for the garden expressing its sense of place, this was starting to look like a takeover bid!

The garden cavalry

There comes a time when a little help is needed in the shape of two men with powerful power tools. Finally, the centre aisle has been restore to its original broad inviting width. Hopefully a little more sunlight will play around the statues.

Can I tempt you?

Well now the delicate fairy footsteps of spring are bringing a touch of pixie dust to the plants. At last we’ve passed the spring equinox and I’m already dreaming of filling my summer pots!

I have to admit though that there’s a simple pleasure, in being able to sit outside, surrounded by the sweet perfume of the spring blooms.
