A fabulously sunny day led to a late summer dalliance with Trenow cove for us and a relaxing afternoon spent on the beach. Trenow is one of the little sheltered coves that ring Perranuthnoe, within sight of Marazion and St Michael’s Mount.
Many years ago Trenow Cove was the home of Wheal Charlotte and it would have looked very different in its industrial heyday but these days only an old mine audit drains on to the cove as a reminder of its past glories when even Prince Albert came in on a steamer to examine the Mine Engine. These days it is mostly the haunt of sea birds including an illusive Hudsonian Wimbrell that sent bird watchers into frenzy last winter
Our visit to Trenow
I was nursing a late summer cough over the Bank Holiday and unable to walk to our more usual secluded cove, so we guiltily drove to the Trenow with the grass brushing the bottom of our little Peugeot. Our plan was for Charles drop me there before taking the car away and walking back but to our surprise we found the little car park full to bursting with one little space left for Priscilla Peugeot. You may not recognise the sterling Priscilla who has sadly replace the venerable Lucy-Land-rover that we shared so many adventures with in autumns past although she does run forever on an egg cup of diesel but I did like the Land rover!
We clambered over the stream and Charles had spotted the ideal spot on the far end of the beach – do you see a theme developing here on our beach adventures exploring the coves of secret Cornwall? And so we slipped and slithered along a shingle bank before clambering up onto the gritty golden sand under the soft earth cliffs.
The sand here is already home to white Daisies crouching close to the sands and sea hollies so we were careful not to disturb them as we settled our towels and picnic and settle to watch the walkers crossing to St Michael’s Mount or look up through the Tamarisk above us through half closed eyes.
Through the long afternoon at Trenow, we watched the snorkelers, canoeist and an enterprising spear fisherman taking the little channel out through the rocks into the sea that I remember riding my pony along to paddle oh so many years ago now but cough, cough, I did have and excuse for not swimming Brrr!
