The reluctant January Gardener!

February 2, 2018

Aloe flowers in january's garden beside gravel path

January 2018

I must admit to being a reluctant January gardener this month – perhaps it was too much Christmas but somehow the prospect of a left over box of Christmas chocs. and afternoon screening of Father Brown won me over instead!
And yet somehow the garden got on with “making spring” all on its own, bursting into life with a flurry of vibrant Narcissus who have been waiting for twelve months for their very own stage show in which to shine and an exotic Aloe has been fascinating in the Italian Garden

The garden is in control and orders Spring!

January – The first flowers of the year

The garden has set the stage for another year with a growing ribbon of spring flowers spreading across its face in clumps and drifts of soft yellow blooms. The days have been short too – something I underestimated when planning my assault on ambitions and chores – or as Charles put it “It was dark so I though you’d come inside!”

The storms this year have been a thing to be reckoned with too, as no sooner had we cleared up one set of storm debris, than it was replaced again, with the compliments of the season. Wonderful for bracing walks along the cliff tops and beaches; joy to wave watchers and surfers but daunting for everyday tasks in the garden! But clearing and planning in the garden has started in earnest now as the month draws to a close – now is the time to lay foundations for the gardening year ahead when our Bed and Breakfast guest will enjoy the garden on sultry summer evenings.

Well I can’t really claim that I knew this was a spinosissima aloe but it seems the most likely suspect at the moment after “asking a friend on twitter” as the label had sadly worn away. I snapped it in the early spring sunshine – what a difference those golden rays make to a garden! In its native Africa it would flower in the cooler months of June but in Cornwall it has chosen January!

A Spring welcome

Spring pots of flowers now flank our front door and while they are neither rare or unusual I think the spring flowers are welcoming and comforting  and on those dreary days of winter a sweet reminder that spring is fast approaching.
