A hint of the Secret Garden

May 21, 2021

Maybe there’s just a hint of the Secret Garden about the garden at Ednovean Farm now. The trio of entrances into the Italian Garden, offer tantalising glimpses, into the inviting sub tropical greenery beyond. They have made quite a change to our well loved gardens, this year.

The magical moment when the early morning garden comes. Tulips and formal box topiary

Inspired by the Secret Garden?

I wonder if it is those first childhood books that shape our ideas about gardens. I know I reluctantly read the venerable children’s book as a child and yet I still recall the kingdom of discoveries held in the gardens magic there.

A secret garden - gateway for a garden stroll Ednovean Farm

In last months garden diary I mentioned the hope that by framing the entrances It will give our visitors a moment to pause and reflect. Maybe this will just leave time to be touched by the very special spirit of the Ednovean Gardens.

“But she was inside the wonderful garden, and she could come through the door under the ivy any time, and she felt as if she had found a world all her own.”

Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

Our own garden is teaming with wildlife now, from scurrying rabbits to nesting robins. The sheltered enclosures provide a perfect sanctuary for so many creatures. Of course at the moment they are so busy feeding their young

Serendipity -The textures of an old table to make a perfect woodland sculpture

“The robin was tremendously busy. He was very much pleased to see gardening begun on his own estate……. Where gardening is done all sorts of delightful things to eat are turned up with the soil. “

Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

Incidentally if you are a fan of the book, scenes for a new film adaptation were filmed in Trebah gardens in Cornwall. That’s one of my favourite gardens to visit too!

Contemporary and rustic; reclaimed and bespoke materials!

Followers of my Garden Diary will have spotted that we have our very own style of mixing reclaimed vintage, with crafted contemporary materials.

Hopefully we’ve saved some items from landfill and crafted our garden in a unique yet sustainable way. It did take me three afternoons to paint the elaborate scrolls of one blacksmith made gate with Hammerite though!

Just before we were due to reopen our B&B, Fixed Right returned to meticulously craft a new fence to frame one of our Secret garden entrances. The fence has been perfectly tailored around an existing tree.

I think the contrast between the contemporary and rustic, reclaimed and bespoke materials are Ednovean!

Goodbye Spring, Hello Summer!

The spring finale came on a tide of vibrant tulips, set against a backdrop shadows playing on the formal box.

Early morning and traces of frost still linger in the spring gardens

The last overblown days of spring are with us now at Ednovean Farm, borne on a savage gale. Yet at least, the relentless drought of early spring, has relinquished its grip, allowing the garden to grow green and lush once more.

Gateway into summer - echiums framing a lawn at Ednovean Farm

Now we can see the first glimpse of summer approaching heralded by the great spires of the Echiums, filled with humming bees.

What will the summer months bring to our garden I wonder. But I know we will have a tranquil secluded spot in our very own Secret Garden.
