Christmas magic and winter solstice

Winter solsticeThe days have sped by in a sort of twilight as we’ve approached the shortest day this week. Each day It has seemed it never become quite light , before dusk fell again and the birds silent for the night as we retreated indoors. Christmas trees and decorating

Christmas treeI set out on a blustery day this week to choose the tree , after a certain amount of time spent in reconnaissance admiring beautiful trees for sale beside the road or leaning near shop doorways. I’ve learnt over the years to take a thick pair of “prickle proof” gloves with me to aid my shopping deliberations because of course faced with a neat bay of Christmas trees, carefully sorted by size and price, my theory is the best one lays undiscovered at the back. Ah these November days in Cornwall we’ve had a little of this weather and a little of that weather this week but generally I do think we’ve been lucky. Some days have dawned when the house cats have resembled hibernating hamsters, tightly curled up and wrapped in their tails yet with the extraordinary instinct of cats for sunshine, they have set out to sunbathe on the gravel terraces as soon as sun has come through.
